As summer approaches, we parents begin to think of vacations, relaxing, sending kids to summer camps, relatives’ homes and just creating time for our children to have fun. Oh, the joys of summer!
But as we make our plans for our kids, remember what God teaches us in Deuteronomy 6:6-7: “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” God has given us an awesome responsibility to instill His word into our children.
“When you sit at home…”
We must find time in the home to teach the principles of righteousness. It is OK to turn off the television and talk to our children. Psalm 34:11 says “Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.” Our world is busy and if we don’t make time to teach our children, the world will. Our kids will learn their values from television, friends, or other figures in their lives, but God makes us responsible to do the teaching.
