BEAVERTON – It is a special day at the market when The Shire of Dragon’s Mist, the Washington County chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and the Beaverton Farmers’ Market gather together to celebrate the Third Annual Medieval Market Day, harkening back to a time when all markets were open-air, complete with medieval attire, activities, games and demonstrations representative of the sixth through 15th centuries.
The market’s 100 plus growers, ranchers and artisan food makers are backdrop to the roaming scene of folks in period costumes, English country dancing, medieval music, rapier tournaments (sword fights), a fashion show, children’s games and more.
Also, there will be a food presentation with samples of medieval cooking including techniques. It is a rare opportunity to experience what pre-17th century life was like in an open-air market. Imagine, at this time there was no such thing as a dining fork!
Medieval Market Day activities at the Beaverton Farmers’ Market are colorful and lively, with events taking place from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., including live music by Odon Soterias, drumming music, strolling singers and dance demonstrations, as well as demonstrations by archers, metal and fiber artists and information and instruction on how to read a coat of arms.
Attendees are encouraged to dress up and be part of the fun.
Beaverton Farmers’ Market’s Market Master Ginger Rapport encourages the public to come in costume, shop and stay for the entertainment.
The Shire of Dragon’s Mist (www.dragonmist.org)is a 22-year-old organization that stages educational demonstrations for community schools, scouting groups and local churches.
Market hours are Saturdays through Nov. 21 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Hall Boulevard, between Third and Fifth streets in downtown Beaverton.
