The Oregon Zoo’s annual Squishing of the Squash, in which some of the world’s largest land animals demolish some of the area’s largest pumpkins, will be held Friday, Oct. 30, at 10:30 a.m. It’s a precursor to the zoo’s Howloween celebration, presented by Sterling Savings Bank on Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1. Events include a scavenger hunt that directs trick-or-treaters to easily accessible activity stations throughout the zoo. Goodie bags filled with candy and prizes await scavenger-hunters at the zoo’s exit. Throughout the weekend, visitors can watch the zoo’s enrichment team provide other animals with pumpkins and other holiday-themed treats.

‘Fields of Fear’ promises scares

An interactive outdoor Halloween performance will take audience members throughout the Washington County Fairgrounds complex in a 30-minute fright-fest presented by Bag&Baggage (through Saturday, 8 p.m. to midnight). A terrifying story will put audience members in a fight for their lives throughout the fairgrounds. Performances are very realistic and frightening — not recommended for children under 12 or those easily disturbed, say organizers. Tickets are $12, available online at www.bagnbaggage.org .

Haunted hospital set at PCC

In Room HT 217 on the Portland Community College Sylvania campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave., from noon to 5 p.m., the nursing lab will be transformed into a frightful hospital. The National Student Nurses Association at PCC has put together a fun, educational and “scary” day focused on promoting health and safety for children. Cost is $4 per person or $3 with a non-perishable food item.

Photos of pet costumes slated

A photographer will take pictures of owners and their pets dressed in costume at Streets of Tanasbourne, Northwest Cornell Road and Stucki Avenue in Hillsboro Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pictures are free, but a donation is suggested. It’s a benefit for the Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital. The first 50 dogs will receive a free dog toy. Prizes for best-dressed dogs include a $400 weekend at the coast, $300 camera from NW Sony Only and $100 Big Al’s gift certificate.

Halloween party for kids and pets

It happens at Farmington Gardens, 21815 S.W. Farmington Road, in Beaverton Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Bring kids and pets decked out for Halloween. Prizes for best overall, scariest, funniest, cutest, etc. For more information, call 503-649-4568 or visit www.farmingtongardens.com .
