Comedian Steven Wright once joked that “everywhere is walking distance, if you have the time.”
Now, people hoping to get to the Tigard Library can get there a little bit easier – and safer – after a new extension of the Fanno Creek Trail officially opens later this month.
The extension includes a crosswalk across Hall Boulevard from Tigard City Hall, which serves as overflow parking for the library, and a wooden footpath, officially known as the Woodruff Bridge, after former City Councilor Tom Woodruff.
“I’m very pleased about that,” Woodruff said about the bridge’s name. “It was a total surprise to me.”
Woodruff, who served on the council until 2008, said that the city often does something for council members after they leave, but was surprised by the news that he would have an extension of the trail named after him.
“It was such a generous gesture,” he said. “Never did I imagine that they’d name a bridge after me.”
Woodruff worked extensively while on the council as an advocate for hiking and biking throughout the city.
Woodruff served as the council’s liaison to the Parks and Recreation Board, and is a longtime fan of the Fanno Creek Trail system.
