Tualatin fifth/sixth-grade Gray stormed into the playoffs with a win when they defeated Tigard White 56-22.
Tualatin started out on defense and allowed Tigard to drive the ball down to the ‘Wolves red zone. Thankfully, Tigard was unable to convert the drive into a score, when they turned it over on downs after Alex Reid stopped the runner on fourth and goal from the two. Then Tualatin faced a fourth and one on their own 13 yard line, when Chase Morrison broke free for an 87 yard touchdown run making the score 6-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Bryce Haskin darted down the field and recovered the ball at the Tigard 38. Tualatin fumbled the ball on first down, but quickly made up for it when Chase Morrison sliced through traffic for his second touchdown of the game. Alex Reid kicked the extra points attempt which made the score 16-0. Then before Tigard could regroup, Bryce Haskin recovered the kickoff again, in almost the same place as before (38-yard line). The quarter came to an end as Alex Reid ran the ball 29 yards to the Tigard 9.
The second quarter essentially began with another Tualatin touchdown, when Alex Reid ran the ball in from the three. He also made the extra points kick to make the score 22-0. On Tigard’s next possession, they were able to move the ball to the Tualatin 26 yard line, but turned the ball over on downs again thanks to tackles from Eric Aarseth, Daeton Harris, Bryce Haskin, and Chase Morrison. Then on first down, Chase Morrison ran the ball down the field again for another touchdown making the score 28-0. Then despite tough defense by Drew Butz, Daylen Mohr, Reynaldo Ceja, Ryan Doty, and Koby Nelson, Tigard was able to put points on the board, when they ran the ball in from the Tualatin 38 yard line. Tigard also kicked the ball for two to make the score 28-8. Tualatin was able to score one more time in the half behind the running of Alex Reid, Daeton Harris, and Chase Morrison, who ran the ball into the end zone. Alex Reid kicked the extra points attempt, ending the half at 36-8.
The third quarter started out with a quick touchdown by Tigard. Ryan Doty stuffed the runner on the extra point attempt, so the score was 36-14. Tualatin’s next possession ate up over six minutes of clock before Chase Morrison ran another touchdown in from the 12. The PAT was no good, making the score 42-14. Tigard answered back quickly with a touchdown and extra points kick which made the score 42-22.
The fourth quarter saw two more touchdowns by Tualatin, one by Daeton Harris that was punched in from the 1 ½ yard line and one by Alex Reid from the Tigard 39. Alex completed one extra point kick, which made the final score 56-22.
It should be noted that the offensive line of Luke Davis, John Ayers, Treves Lindstrom, Marquise Saucedo, Cooper Rentfrow, and Jared Welter really showed that they may be undersized but are fast and tough enough to create big holes for the ‘Wolves running backs to run though.
With the win, Tualatin Gray will be playing in the championship game next week, where they look to make it a perfect 10-0 season.
The opening round of the Montavon Valley Conference Playoff’s pitted the regular season co-champions Tigard fifth/sixth-grade Green (8-0) against the third seed West Linn 5/6 White (6-2). The game was a battle from the beginning with neither team able to score on their opening drives. On its second possession, the Tigers struck first behind the offensive line play of Chance Callaway, Joel Johnson, Ryan Bay, Thomas Vickers, Paul Vickers, Nate Heaukulani, Zack Jacobs, and Michael McCoy. Tigard wingback Tyler Walker scampered 34 yards off-tackle for the first half’s only score.
On the opening drive of the second half, West Linn consumed most of the 3rd quarter and scored. With the PAT, West Linn led 8-6. Tigard was unable to sustain its first possession of the second half and punted to the Lions. Shortly thereafter, the tide started to turn the Tigers way. Plagued by delay of game penalties and illegal substitution penalties, the Lions fate was sealed with less than 3 minutes to go in the game. On fourth down and 2 on the Tigard 32 yard line, West Linn abandoned the run and tried unsuccessfully to pass for the first down. Tigard cornerback Michael McCoy batted the pass out of the intended receiver’s hands resulting in the ball being handed over to Tigard on downs. Thereafter, the Tigers began what will now be known as the Tigard Green version of “The Drive.”
Following another Lion illegal substitution penalty, Tigard running backs quickly gained over 15 yards on 3 carries. Thereafter, the Tigers went to the air and reached into their bag of tricks. JT Greenough hit Joel Johnson for 8 yards in the flat. Fullback Alex Compton blasted up the middle for a couple more yards. The Tigers followed this with a “Hook-n-Ladder” for a gain of 20+ yards to the West Linn 13 yard line. After a short gain on first down and an incomplete pass on second down, the Tigers went back to air. With 1:08 left to go in the game, Greenough hit Kyle Baldes on a little flair pass for a gain of 7. This left the Tigers with fourth down and 2 yards to go for a first down on the West Linn 7 yard line. Following a timeout, Baldes headed left on the sweep untouched into the end zone. The battery of Paul Vickers, Tyler Walker and Ryan Bay successfully executed the PAT giving Tigard a 14-8 lead with :52 seconds left in the game. Out of timeouts, West Linn’s chance for a comeback ended 2 plays later when Tigard Safety Matthew Ferguson intercepted a tipped pass and return it 44 yards to the West Linn 12 yard line. From there, the Tigers were able to run the clock out.
Defensively, the line play of Sam Averette, Blake Hoggins, Kevin Henneman, Jack Chimenti, Justin Ziehnert, Tyler Prock, Jacob Logan and Austin Lassiter was great. Their work allowed Tigard linebackers Thomas Vickers, Ryan Bay and Nate Heaukulani to rally to the football. Tigard defensive backs AJ Wilson, Nash Rauen, Jack Block and Ryan Schaffer were excellent in run support. Unfortunately, defensive back Jacob Davis was unable to play due to a broken wrist. However, he provided the Tigers with great sideline support. With the victory, the Tigard Green pushed their season record to 9-0 and advanced to the League Championship Game against Southridge Gold.
The first day of November brought the coolest and wettest gameday of the year. It also brought Tualatin fifth/sixth-grade White’s first come-from-behind victory of the year. And what a time for it.
Facing Sunset in a first round playoff game, the Wolves started slowly going 4 and out on their first series. The defense then gave up a couple of first downs before Kaleb Olsen smashed through and dropped the ballcarrier for a 6-yard loss on third down. The Apollos went for it on fourth and long deep in Wolf territory but Jake Day hurried the QB into an errant throw giving the ball back to Tualatin.
Again, the Tualatin offense couldn’t get rolling and on fourth down, punted the ball. Sunset’s amazing return man brought the ball back deep into the Tualatin side of the field and Cameron Frey tackled him to save a touchdown. However, 3 plays later Sunset scored anyways to take an 8-0 lead.
Sensing the urgency, the Wolves’ offense began to click. First, a couple of runs by Jordan Wilson and Day softened up the Apollos. Then, with Dylan Petit and Malachi Seib sealing a hole for him, Wilson ran a counter play 69 yards to paydirt. The rest of the line was tremendous as well — Jorge Severiano, Frey, Evan Gang, Olsen, Joshua Watson and Zach Reynholds. The missed extra point left the score at 8-6, Sunset.
Sunset responded quickly with a 59 yard scoring run on their next play and just like that it was 14-6. After a nice kickoff return by Alex Burley, the offense couldn’t muster any more yardage and had to punt.
Each team then went three downs and punted to each other but then Sunset mounted a lengthy drive near the end of the second quarter driving into the red zone. On the last play of the half, Brian Davis intercepted a pass in the end zone saving what could have been a devastating score. Other Wolves contributing to the defensive effort with tackles and tenacity were Enzo Allen, Doug Skinner, Burley, Harrison Visse, Blake McDill, Olsen, Garret Cutright, CJ Dahm and Jared Platt.
Sunset began the second half with the ball and got a huge gain from their star running back however Frey did not give up and eventually chased him down at the 3 yard line showing great heart and determination. Unfortunately the Apollos were too close to the goal line and took it in three plays later for a touchdown making the score 22-6.
The Wolves’ offense appeared stymied when they got the ball back and had to punt on 4th down. With their backs against the wall and time running out on their season, they responded with a tenacious effort to claw their way back. Wilson sacked the Sunset QB for a big loss and forced the Apollos to punt.
Then began one of Tualatin’s trademark grinding drives with lots of medium length runs from Visse, Day and Wilson. They converted 2 first downs and Day capped off the drive with a 2 yard touchdown. Olsen boomed the kick through to make it 22-14.
Momentum had swung to Tualatin but would there be enough time? They held Sunset to another 3 and out. With the ball back, they didn’t waste any time scoring again with Wilson cruising in from 28 yards out. However, the tying extra point attempt was no good. With only 4 minutes left and trailing 22-20, Tualatin had to try an onside kick. Olsen kicked it perfectly so that it ricocheted off the Apollo player. Jackson Hale pounced on the loose ball to recover for the Wolves and keep hope alive. Three plays later Visse swept around left end for the go-ahead touchdown to make it 26-22 with 2:30 left.
Sunset wasn’t about to go down without a fight. They picked up 21 yards on a nice pass play. Then following a sack by Wilson and Skinner, their runner swept around left end and looked to be headed to the end zone but Frey again ran him down and out of bounds at the 15 yard line. 3 plays later, with no timeouts and 9 seconds remaining, Olsen squashed Sunset’s last attempt to run to his side and sealed the victory setting up a rematch with Southridge for the division championship next Saturday.
