TUALATIN — The Tigard and Tualatin high school girls golf teams have similar goals.
And, if Monday’s season-opening tournament is any indication, then it could be a very interesting race to see which team, if not both, reaches those lofty, state-tournament expectations.
The Tigers claimed the early-season bragging rights between the two squads as they edged the Timberwolves by two strokes at the season-opening Tigard-Tualatin Showcase invitational held Monday at Tualatin Country Club.
“This is the first time we’ve beat Tualatin in a little while,” Tigard coach Julie Carlsen said. “I think we were able to do that because we have so much depth as a team. These girls play for each other — they play for the team. They keep their heads down and their chins up.”
Tigard finished in third place at Monday’s tournament with a score of 411 strokes. Tualatin placed fourth, two shots back with a 413.
“I think we had some first-match yipes,” Tualatin coach Nancy Lee said. “I think we can be a lot better than what we showed. We just need to buckle down and get better.”
Tigard already showed that it’s definitely better than it was at this time last year — when the Tigers shot a 450 at the season-opening event.
“I think we’re as good now as we were at the end of last season,” Carlsen said. “The atmosphere and the girls’ attitudes are awesome.”
And, with that positive attitude, the Tigers have high aspirations for the season.
“The girls set the goal to get the whole team to state this year,” Carlsen said.
Tualatin, the traditional league powerhouse, has similar goals.
